Big Brothers Big Sisters is one of many organizations in the Joplin area devoted to supporting the progress and development of local youth. Geared toward providing positive role models for children ages 6 through 14, Big Brothers Big Sisters has a long history of benefiting both “Bigs” and “Littles” involved in mentoring relationships.

On Thursday, March 8th, the Community Foundation of Southwest Missouri awarded $1.925 million in grants to five local agencies on behalf of the Joplin Recovery Fund. The grants were awarded to:
- Joplin Long-Term Recovery Committee/ Rebuild Joplin: $1.5 million for building materials and supplies to rebuild and repair 100 homes in 2012. The nine partner agencies include: Habitat for Humanity, Rebuild Joplin, Fuller Center for Housing, Mennonite Disaster Services, Catholic Charities, Harry S. Truman Coordinating Council, Spring River Baptist Association, College Heights Christian Church, and Joplin Family Worship.
- Rebuild Joplin/SBP: $250,000 to repair and rebuild homes in Joplin and Duquesne for tornado …

Community Support Services of Missouri was one of many organizations directly impacted by the May 22nd tornado. In addition to destroying their main office building, activity center, and transportation vehicles, the storm also affected 119 individuals in their care, 26 of whom required new permanent housing, some with physical disability. Community Foundation of Southwest Missouri is accepting grant applications for tornado related housing repairs and rebuilds in Joplin and Duquesne. The application process is open to 501(c)3 and other IRS-recognized non-profit and charitable groups, such as faith-based organizations.

Grant applications for other tornado related projects will be considered on an ongoing basis.

After the May 22nd tornado, which destroyed nearly half of Joplin’s child care centers, the Joplin Family YMCA responded with the decision to provide care for the community’s infants at its Heritage Youth Development Center, a child care facility which previously did not provide care for children under the age of two. Providing emergency care for infants inspired the Y to offer a long term infant care unit at Heritage. A grant from the Community Foundation of Southwest Missouri’s Joplin Recovery Fund made that possible.
